For now, Twitter is testing the editing tool internally, but soon it will be available for the users via premium service i.e. Twitter Blue users. Twitter Blue is a premium service of Twitter subscription, it was released last November in the U.S. In which users get access to premium features at $4.99 per month. “Think of it as a short period of time to do things like fix typos, add missed tags, and more,” Twitter wrote in a tweet, adding that edited tweets will have a label showing it is edited. On the other side, readers can access the full unedited version of the tweet. “You should be able to participate in the conversation in a way that makes sense to you,” the company added. “And we’ll keep working on ways that make it feel effortless to do just that.” The company emphasizes the aim of this feature as to make using Twitter “less stressful.”
But why is the record of the unedited tweet
The company cleared the doubt saying, the historical record of an unedited tweet is important to protect “the integrity of the conversation” and hence for creating a record for the public. One of the Twitter comments from 2020, by the company founder, says “You can never be too careful.” It was from the time when the company was announcing the possibility of an edit feature. At that time also, Twitter highlighted the fact that they will monitor for any way this feature might get misused. “You might send a tweet and someone might retweet that and an hour later you might completely change the content of that tweet,” Twitter founder, Jack Dorsey stated. “The person that retweeted the original tweet is now retweeting and rebroadcasting something that is completely different. So that’s something to watch out for.” On April 4, Elon Musk also tweeted a poll to ask, “Do you want an edit button?” To this question, around three-quarters of almost 4.4 million responses said yes. Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal also tweeted, saying “The consequences of this poll will be important. Please vote carefully.”
